Semi-intelligent minor race native to many worlds in and outside the Imperium.

Chirpers are omnivore/gatherers in the 25 kilogram mass range. They have vestigial wings (chirpers on some small worlds can fly short distances) and opposable thumbs.

Living in small groups with limited social organization, they follow age-old patterns of foraging for fruits and berries, supplementing their diet with occasional small animals which they catch and kill with crude tools.

Chirper intelligence is at the low end of the scale and ranges from a few points above animal levels to a few points below average human.

Chirpers are named for the sharp, bird-like chirp which characterizes their speech. They can learn human speech, often handling a large vocabulary with ease, but their conversation retains the chirping overtones.

Chirpers are recognized by the Imperial authorities as intelligent and, as such, enjoy the protections and responsibilities of intelligent species within the Imperium. Most chirpers live in established reservations with only limited intercourse with humans.

Hercules Class heavy merchant Developed and produced for operations in the Aramis and neighbouring sub sectors by Akerut. It mounts jump drive-W, maneuver drive-W, and power plant-W, giving performance of jump-1 and 1G acceleration.

Fuel tankage for 510 tons supports the power plant and one jump-1. Adjacent to the bridge is a computer Model/2bis. There are fifteen staterooms and no low berths. The ship has four hardpoints and four tons allocated for fire control. Installed on the hardpoints are four triple’ turrets, each mounting three beam lasers. There is one ship’s vehicle: a 40-ton pinnace. Cargo capacity is 2911 tons. The hull is streamlined. The Hercules heavy merchant requires a crew of 15: pilot/captain, navigator, 7 engineers, medic, 4 gunners, and pinnace pitot. The ship does not carry passengers. The ship costs MCr985.2 (including 1% architect’s fee and 10% volume production discount) and takes 36 months to build.

The Hercules class is a heavy duty carrier used for both bulk cargo and containerized shipments. The ship is in service primarily in the Aramis subsector, but several examples are also in service with Tukera.

Because its jump-l drives make larger distances difficult, Akerut maintains a supply of SOD-ton demountable fuel tanks (valued at Cr500,000; can be mounted in two weeks at its starport locations within the subsector. Hercules ships can be fitted with one, two, or even three sets of tanks in their cargo holds, thus displacing cargo capacity

Ships in the Hercules class carry names suggesting immense size or strength: Hercules, Mammoth, Giant, Titan, Sampson, Brobdingnag, or Goliath.
